"The imagined community of millions seems more real as a team of eleven named people." – Eric Hobsbawm

At the dawn of the twentieth century, Jewish life in Europe underwent a major revolution. As Jews flocked to the cities and encountered modern life head-on, Jewish men and women found their everyday lives completely transformed. With their traditional, provincial lives left behind int eh shtetl, Jews invented new traditions to replace the old – traditions to accompany their new status as urban cosmopolitans. For the many whose lives were once centered around religious institutions and whose days were spent in the village study house, a new home was to found on the soccer fields of Europe. Join Robert Adler Peckerar, assistant professor of Jewish Literature and Culture at CU-Boulder, for an interactive evening that examines the phenomenon of Jewish soccer in central and eastern Europe at the start of the last century – its controversies, politics, and importance in understanding the birth of a radically new Jewish culture.
